Irvine residents are relieved to hear a local bus stops will finally be reinstated after their turning points were taken over by construction vans for six months.

Since May of this year, public and school buses have had to stop in a “dangerous” spot between two roundabouts due to nearby builders from Bellway Homes parking vans in the stops' turning points.

Now, after six months of campaigning, residents will finally have use of the bus stop again from November 14.

A resident of Montgomerie Park said:“The council should have never agreed to the bus stops being put out of use at the very beginning just to make life easier for the builder.

“It’s a huge site and the plans should never have affected where the buses were required to turn.”

Matting was placed at the temporary bus stop to mark the spot and try and alleviate the issues surrounding the muddy ground.

The issue was supposed to have been solved before schools began in August, but no significant progress was made on the issue until this month after a meeting between North Ayrshire Council, the SPT, and Bellway Homes.

Potential solutions to the issue were offered as Bellway Homes offered to supply a banksman but after consulting with SPT were denied permission.

It was also suggested by the council that school kids could be picked up and dropped off at outside of the BP garage, but this was criticised by parents as being equally as unsafe as the garage is opposite a large roundabout.

Councillor Nairn McDonald had been on the case for several months.

He said: "We've now got agreement that the bus stops can start from the fourteenth.

“That development is going to take a couple of years to build so it’s not acceptable for people in Montgomerie Park to be expected to just live with disruption for that length of time.

“I’ve been told about folk who’s elderly parents rely on buses and they’re having to traipse through mud or having to walk on slippery surfaces and it’s just not acceptable.

“The people in Montgomerie Park have been really let down – there’s not been communication.”

Bellway Homes are currently in the process of building 146 new homes in the Montgomerie Park area of Irvine.

Bellway Homes has been contacted for comment.
