POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a fatal road crash in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, November 16).

The incident took place at around 3.45am in Kilmarnock on the A71 between the Moorfield and Bellfield roundabouts.

This road has been described by police as "the main arterial route between Kilmarnock and Irvine", so they believe there may have been other vehicles near the scene at the time, despite the time of day.

The collision involved a Vauxhall Corsa travelling eastbound on the A71 which collided with a lorry parked in a lay-by.

The male driver of the Corsa, who was the only occupant of the car, died at the scene. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

The male lorry driver was not injured.

Police have yet to confirm the identity of the deceased while relatives are informed of the incident.

Sergeant Stewart Taylor, roads policing unit, Ayrshire, said: “Although the crash happened in the early hours of the morning, this road is the main arterial route between Kilmarnock and Irvine so it’s possible that other vehicles were on the road at the time who may have either seen the crash happen or have information that will assist officers with their enquiries.

“Any information, including dash-cam footage, can be passed to officers via 101. Please quote reference number 0377 of Wednesday, November 16, 2022 when calling.”
