AN IRVINE woman says she is concerned for her family's health due to ongoing damp and mould issues in her home.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, said a support worker described the problem parts of her North Ayrshire Council house as "the worst she has ever seen".

She added that due to her changing family cirumstances she has already applied to move to another property - however this was back in 2017.

The Irvine resident said that due to the size and requirements of her family, she needs a four bedroomed house - rather than the one she currently has.

She added that her youngest child has profound learning disabilities and has complex support needs.

Further to this, they have health issues that require specialist equipment, meaning they are in need of a room of their own.

This concern has been topped off by the condition of her home - and the damp and mould which have taken over in large areas.

Walls have been left blackened with this, with some areas becoming so damp that mushrooms have began to sprout from the wall.

The concerned woman told the Times: "It has been going on for months and we have been waiting five years for a new property.

"A member of my child support team has voiced concerns regarding condition of our house.

"She has visited many homes over the years in her career and has told me that the extent of the mould and severe dampness is the worst she has ever seen.

"The housing have a record of my complaints and several other agencies involved have contacted them on my behalf.

"I am really concerned for our health and my children."

North Ayrshire Council, who manage the property, were contacted on these issues.

They say they are working with the tenant to find a solution as quickly as possible.

But they added that finding a home to suit her needs can be challenging - though they will now consider finding temporary accomadtion as an option.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “While we generally don’t comment on individual cases, we can confirm that we are working with our tenant to address the repair issues identified within her home and also offer advice and assistance regarding her application for housing.

“There are very specific needs for the tenant’s family that we are trying to meet and, unfortunately, the type of property required does not become available very often.

"Nevertheless, we will continue to work with her on potential options – including suitable temporary accommodation - and will ensure that she is kept up to date every step of the way.

“We sympathise with the tenant, and we are aiming to ensure we can find a solution as quickly as possible.”
