Ayrshire darts star Cameron Menzies said he was "chuffed to bits" to progress into the second round of the PDC World Championship.

Though Menzies did admit he was "gutted" by his performance, at the Alexandra Palace in London, which he felt was far below his usual standard.

The Muirkirk star defeated Brazilian Diogo Portela 3-1 in sets to progress into the next round.

Now the Scot will face off against Dutchman Vincent van der Voort, on Thursday, December 22, for a place in the third round.

Menzies is a familiar face across Ayrshire, having played in goals for a number of amateur football sides across the county.

'Cammy', whose partner 'Queen of the Palace' Fallon Sherrock is also taking part in the tournament, cut a strangely dejected figure following the match.

He told PDC darts media team: "It wasn't pretty, wasn't class, wasn't good, it was a battle. I'm not proud of the win in terms of the way I played but it's all about the win, to me that's the most important thing.

"I felt good, played poor, maybe got involved too much with the crowd, showed a bit of inexperience at that level.

"I'm chuffed to bits to win, but gutted how I played because I have been playing pretty decent recently.

"If I play like that against Vincent I'll be doon the road, I'll be back to work on the Friday!"

Menzie's main frustration was with his scoring - which he said is usually the strong point of his game.

Though he more than made up for this with his finishing, ending the match an impressive 10/19 on the doubles.

This was also Cammy's debut on the World Championship stage, so any nerves could certainly be forgiven.

Next up is world number 24 van der Voort, in what Menzie's admitted could be an "explosive" game given the pace both men play at.

While Menzie's partner Fallon Sherrock is no stranger to Ally Pally headlines - having become the first woman to win a PDC World Championship match back in 2019, when she went onto win consecutive matches.

She watched on proudly as Cammy progressed in his first round match - while she prepares for her own tomorrow, December 20.

And while he will be hoping both can progress far in the tournament, he will no doubt be hoping it is he who can make headlines in this year's event.
