THE owner of Irvine's oldest pub has given the Times an insight into what customers can expect when the venue reopens.

It is safe to say there has been a lot of questions surrounding the re-opening of The Ship - formerly known as The Ship Inn - with so many having fond memories of the past in the historic gastro-pub.

So when the Times visited earlier this week there was plenty to talk about with owner Christopher Murray.

One thing the owner emphasised is that this was not just a personal project - it was all about giving Irvine, Ayrshire, and the rest of the west, The Ship back.

Christopher says adjustments will continue to be made once they are open - and that he will be more than happy to hear feedback from customers following their visits.

Some customers of the pub in its previous guise have already voiced their hopes - including several mouthwatering dishes from past menus.

Though, as can be expected with such a historic venue, many people have expectations from past visits of what they'd like to see.

From their famous steak pie to their chicken supreme 'with the orange gravy', Christopher says many of the old favourites will remain - alongside new additions.

One thing to look out for will be their daily specials - as they hope to give their new head chef, and other members of the kitchen team, a chance to show their flair.

One point Christopher made was that the pub's layout will include an area for those only looking for a drink - which is not to say those dining cannot hang around for a few after their meal.

The popular 'snug' will remain, and will be dog-friendly, ensuring The Ship still offers a comforting, homely feeling.

Many of the old familiar fixtures have been maintained, including nods to regulars in the form of plaques and signs and memorabilia dating back centuries.

The fireplaces have been maintained, but have been upgraded to make sure visitors have somewhere to warm up after a cold walk along the harbourside.

And, of course, dotted around the venue are number of nods to the pub's, and town's, maritime heritage - this is The Ship after all.

There will also be pointers to help customers who may be struggling with their mental health - something Christopher is keen to acknowledge and to provide support for where he can.

There will be some changes - firstly that the upstairs function room will not be used upon re-opening, and secondly that, for the time being at least, the venue won't be open on Mondays or Tuesdays.

As previously reported, The Ship will operate on a bookings-only basis on reopening, though an official system has yet to be put in place. Phone lines are also yet to be installed at the venue.
