Irvine’s Scottish Maritime Museum is launching ‘reminiscence’ social groups for former maritime workers, their loved ones, and Harbourside area residents.

Starting on January 19 and running until March, each get-together is free to join and will allow participants to share stories and listen to others over a cuppa.

Participants can also explore artefacts and photographs from the Museum’s national maritime heritage collection.

Learning and Access Manager at the museum, Claire Munro, said: “We’re thrilled to start the year by opening our doors to bring everyone together to share memories of life in the maritime industry or on the Harbourside over a cuppa.

“It’s also a great opportunity for those coming along to explore the amazing maritime heritage collection on show across the vast Linthouse, itself formerly a shipyard engine shed.

“As there are 10 places available at each session, we urge everyone to book their slot quickly to avoid disappointment.”

Three reminiscence groups will run fortnightly at different times throughout the coming months.

Working in the Maritime Industry Group will take place on Thursday mornings at 10am starting January 19, Life in Irvine Harbourside Group will be held on Friday afternoons at 1pm starting January 20, and Loved Ones of Maritime Workers Group will be on Saturday mornings at 10.30am starting January 21.

The sessions will take place in the museum’s “cosy and accessible” education room and assistance will be provided to those who need help covering travel costs.

Carers and family members are welcome to attend alongside anyone who may need assistance and support – but they must also book a space.

Places can be booked on the museum’s website (www.scottishmaritimemuseum.org), by calling 01294 278 283, or by emailing education@scotmaritime.org.uk.
