AN IRVINE boxing club has launched a fundraising campaign after thousands of pounds worth of equipment were lost to a fire.

The blaze ravaged the gym used by Irvine Elite Boxing Club on Sunday and left a large majority of the equipment unusable.

The club shared pictures of the gym, on the South Newmoor Industrial Estate, in the aftermath of the fire, with the previously white brick walls now stained black with smoke.

They also shared images of two skips which had to be filled with equipment that has been damaged and they have now had to throw away.

The blaze, which the gym says was caused by an electrical fault on a wall heater, saw three fire engines rush to the scene on Sunday evening.

There were no reported casualties.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 4.08pm on Sunday, January 15 to reports of a fire within a building on South Newmoor Industrial Estate, Irvine.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and firefighters extinguished a small fire within a commercial property.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

For the time being, Gugy Baljit Summel is allowing the club to operate out of BlastFitness Gym in Ayr, though the club are keen to get back to their home in Irvine.

So they have now set up a JustGiving page - with the aim of raising £2,000 to help replace equipment lost to the fire such as boxing gloves, head guards and mats.

A representative from the club explained: "Unfortunately last night Irvine Elite Boxing Club had a fire and caused significant amount damage to the gym and equipment.

"We are going to need to replace a lot of our equipment for the members to use and help get our gym cleaned up for use again.

"Any donation would be grateful at this moment in time."

At the time of writing, the club has raised £925 towards its goal, thanks to more than 30 donors.
