A FORMER teacher-turned-councillor has been appointed as North Ayrshire’s new Mental Health Champion.

Councillor Jean McClung, who represents Saltcoats and Stevenston, has officially taken over the role from Provost Anthea Dickson, who stood down citing time pressures.

The councillor said she will do everything she can to help her constituents and hopes she can encourage more people to speak up about their mental health.

Cllr McClung said: “I want to make sure, going forward, there is no stigma attached to mental health issues. I want people to discuss their mental health issues the same way they would talk about a physical ailment.

“I will do everything within my power to direct people to support. I can help with things like getting funding for days out – which can make a big difference – and I can be there just to talk, which can also make a difference.

“I am encouraged by the way society acknowledges mental health issues and I feel that people have a greater understanding.

“I will make sure that organisations and community groups are aware there is a person on the council to support them.

“We are getting better at talking about it and I am looking forward to being able to do what I can to help.”

The councillor acknowledged the vitality of talking to friends and family and reminded constituents that they shouldn’t hesitate to talk to a GP if they are struggling.

Ms McClung also noted the importance of groups such as Saltcoats Link Up, Three Towns Growers, and The Men’s Shed – which she has been involved in for years – in benefitting the community’s mental health.

She added: “I have been helping the Men’s Shed since it started, and I know how valuable it is. It is a lifeline for people.

“And at the allotments it isn’t all about the pleasure of growing. It is about the social interaction it offers.

“At Saltcoats Link Up, they are regenerating the town centre with things like murals and flower beds, and it is helping people feel part of the community.

“These are people who are interested in their town, but it is also about companionship. And I will continue to support these groups as I know the mental health benefits they bring.”
