A charitable Kilwinning man praises the town’s “community spirit” as his Easter egg drive for Crosshouse Hospital celebrates its 12th year.

Michael Kirkum has been collecting Easter eggs to donate to children in the hospital since 2012 – and has been fundraising for the community for the past 30 years.

With his Easter egg donation campaign reaching its 12th year, Michael is hopeful this year’s collection will be bigger and better than ever.

He said: “Kilwinning has a good community spirit and that’s a very good thing to have.

“You keep thinking people can’t give anymore but they just seem to keep donating.

“This is a wee idea that came about when I was standing in a pub one night, wondering what I could do for charity, and some guy came by with an Easter egg and that’s how it came about.

“[We collected] 1,400 last year and well over 10,000 in the years we’ve been going.

“It feels absolutely amazing – I’m absolutely humbled by the support, and I’m surprised at what I get.”

Every year Michael collects eggs from donators’ homes – but this year he will be joined by his son, Michael Kirkum Jr.

Whilst he organises the Easter egg drive, Michael senior is also planning a charity Cranberry Jam concert for April 15 in Kilwinning’s Cranberry Moss Community Centre to raise funds for the local food larder.

Despite the difficulties balancing the two campaigns, Michael is keen as ever to keep fundraising and is thankful for his son’s help.

He added: “My son’s doing a bit this year because I’m kept with this concert.

“The concert’s just crazy the now – but it’s getting there!

“55 tickets have been sold so that’s half away.”
