S2 pupils from Greenwood Academy defeated 16 teams from 14 other schools to win an award in a STEM competition.

The team won the Pupil’s Choice Award – as voted on by other teams – for their project for the Industrial Cadets Bronze Project.

Their win was announced at the graduation ceremony on Monday February 27, where all pupils involved in the project achieved their bronze award in front of industry guests, government officials, and their families.

The national initiative challenges pupils to create a project focused on sustainability and is run by the Engineering Development Trust with Viridor and the Clyde Valley Residual Waste Project delivering the Clyde competition.

Steven Don, Head of Local Authority Contracts Scotland for Viridor, said: “Viridor is delighted to be part of a partnership which offers young people across the Clyde Valley local authorities the opportunity to work on such an exciting project.

“The development of key skills and knowledge adds to the value of this important environmental project.”

Winners of the Best Overall Project which was determined by a panel of judges and experts came from Woodfarm High School’s Eco Ego Team who will go on to Scottish National Final in June.

At the ceremony pupils also went on a virtual tour of Viridor’s Bargeddie Materials Recycling Facility to see how the Clyde Valley Residual Waste Project works.

The Industrial Cadets Bronze Project first started in 2020 with this year’s ceremony being the first in three to be held in person.
