A drugged-up driver has been banned while he awaits his punishment after crashing his car in the early hours of Boxing Day.

Callum Alexander pleaded guilty to three charges at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week and will be sentenced for the offences next month.

The 25-year-old admitted driving dangerously near the Redburn Roundabout, between Kilwinning and Irvine, on December 26 last year while intoxicated through drink or drugs.

Thursday's court hearing was told that Alexander was driving a Honda CRV and collected two friends at around 3am.

While travelling at excessive speeds and accelerating sharply on the A737 towards the roundabout, he mounted a kerb before losing control of the vehicle.

The car skidded, struck another kerb and ended up on two wheels before overturning and landing in nearby bushes.

The procurator fiscal depute said: "The two people who were collected ran off from the scene fearing that the vehicle would somehow explode before the fire and rescue service was contacted.

"The accused was spoken to and another individual was found nearby."

Alexander, of Winton Avenue in Kilwinning, was taken to Saltcoats police office where he failed a breath test, returning a reading of 33mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath; the legal limit in Scotland is 22mcg/100ml.

The fiscal depute also told the court that a drug swipe taken at the station tested positive for cocaine.

Defence solicitor Simon Brown called for sentencing to be deferred for the preparation of reports, citing "a number of issues" in Alexander's personal life leading up to the incident.

Sheriff Laura Mundell told Alexander: "These are serious charges you have pleaded guilty to today, particularly for a man of 25 who has never been involved with the courts before."

Sentence was deferred until April and Alexander's bail was continued. He was disqualified from driving in the meantime.
