TRIBUTES have poured in following the passing of a former footballer from the old junior leagues.

Ian Ashcroft, who played as a defender for Irvine Meadow and coached at Beith, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, aged 60.

He was a well decorated footballer, winning the Scottish Junior Cup and League Cup in his career which included time at Pollok and Arthurlie as well as his stints in Ayrshire.

While his glowing personality also left an impression on all who met Iain, with particular tributes paid by his former club Beith - where he also spent time as a coach when John Millar was in charge.

Paying homage to Iain on social media, the club said: "It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of a junior football legend, Iain Ashcroft who passed away yesterday.

"A former coach at the club, under John Millar. Iain was a larger than life character known for his practical jokes and great sense of humour.

"A real gem who’ll be sadly missed and was much loved by all at the club and no doubt all of his other clubs.

"A fierce opponent in his playing days with clubs such as Arthurlie, Irvine Meadow and Pollok, his will to win was never in doubt and was evident when he coached.

"A devoted family man, who’ll be missed by all who knew him. Thoughts of him will always bring a smile to my face."

While across North Ayrshire, Irvine Meadow added: "Ashy was a great character and very highly thought of by all at Meadow Park.

"Our thoughts are with all of his family and friends at this sad time."

Further tributes poured in from fans and former players of both clubs when the sad news broke.

Former Meadow goalkeeper Michael Wardrope commented: "Very sad news. Played against and with the big man.

"A proper old school centre half, brilliant on and off the park. He will be sadly missed."

While former Beith goalkeeper Stephen O'Neill added: "Gutted, great guy had so many laughs with the big man over the years will be sorely missed."

These thoughts were echoed by former striker Andy Reid, who said: "Gutted. Lots of happy memories from time spent with him."

While fellow club legend John Sheridan commented: "I watched him playing many times mainly in his Pollok days and he was an absolute colossus.

"I then had the pleasure of getting to know and be coached by him. A great guy and he'll be missed by everyone who knows him."

And Iain's son David passed on his thanks for all the kind messages in light of his father's passing.

He said: "Thank you all for your comments. He was a very well liked man and all the comments we’ve seen and received have been a massive comfort at a very hard time."
