DRIVERS in Ayrshire are being warned of five days of roadworks on the A78 trunk road near Irvine.

Diversions will be in place while Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland undertake essential refurfacing work on the northbound on and off slip roads at the Newhouse interchance from Monday, April 24 until Saturday April 29.

The work - which will also involve a lane closure on the northbound A78 itself - will begin at 6am on April 24 and is due to to be complete by 6am five days later.

Amey says the scheme will benefit around 2,000 vehicles using the slip roads each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.

A spokesperson added: "The work will be carried out using total closures of the on and off-slips as well as lane 1 of the A78 northbound carriageway, and a signed diversion will be in place.

"We thank road users for their patience and co-operation while this essential work takes place."

Motorists who would normally leave the northbound A78 at Newhouse will be diverted to continue to the Warrix interchange, returning on the southbound A78 to the exit at Newhouse.

Traffic which would normally join the northbound A78 at Newhouse will be diverted on to the southbound A78 to the Meadowhead roundabout to join the northbound carriageway.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.

Amey says the work is weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if conditions are not favourable.
