A FIRE broke out in a Kilwinning Community Sports Club car park yesterday evening (April 12).

And a representative from the club, on Pennyburn Road, has slammed those responsible after they said this was started intentionally.

The blaze broke out in the club's overflow car park shortly after 8pm, and it appears "rubbish" was used to create the blaze.

Given its location, and completely avoidable nature, the sports club quickly came out to condemn the acts.

A club spokesperson said: "To the people who thought it would be a great idea to set two fires in the overspill car park at the club.

"First of all, a kids play park is 20 yards from it.

"Secondly you are taking the fire brigade away from being at a potential house fire or other serious matters.

"What if there were cars close by? Please respect our club."

Today, April 13, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed they attended the blaze.

A SFRS spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.20pm on Wednesday, April 12 to reports of a fire within a car park at Pennyburn Road, Kilwinning.

“Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting some rubbish.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
