More Londoners are set to be able to access financial support ahead of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion in August.

It comes following calls from parties including the Liberal Democrats who previously proposed that the scheme be doubled from £110 million to £220 million.

Now the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan shared that the scrappage scheme will increased to reach a wider number of people.

Who is eligible for the ULEZ scrappage scheme?

The expansion of the ULEZ help scheme will see that all families on child benefits will now be offered the support as well as small businesses with less than 50 employees.

Plus, the Mayor's office said the scheme will now benefit care workers and that charities will now be able to retrofit scrap three vans instead of the previous one, according to the BBC

The expansion will begin at the end of July and will mean that more than 870,000 families in London and a further 570,000 in outer London on child benefit will be able to access the scheme.

The Mayor's office also added that the ULEZ scrappage scheme would be "under ongoing review."

Sadiq Khan faces calls to reconsider the ULEZ scrappage scheme

The expansion comes after the Mayor faced calls to reconsider the scheme with suggestions that it could be doubled and reach a wider proportion.

The Lib Dems proposed an amendment to the Mayor’s budget in February this year to double the size of the ULEZ scrappage scheme to £220 million by drawing money from City Hall’s reserves.

Although it gained support, it was ultimately voted down, however now it seems the Mayor's office has heeded the calls and is extending the scheme.
