Irvine Times: Some of the winning team from James Watt College

A MONEY savvy group of young people from James Watt College in Kilwinning scooped second place at the Money for Life Challenge UK final in London, for their successful student enterprise project.

Having beat off stiff competition from groups in Wales, England, and Northern Ireland, this achievement is a huge step forward for JWCMoney1, a student credit union project who work with 1st Alliance credit union, offering their services to local people.

Their project was designed to increase awareness around the importance of financial budgeting and financial education for students and local communities.

Irvine Times: Jim Scott was appointed fire service area manager for Ayrshire

AYRSHIRE’S new top fireman pledged that the public wouldn’t notice a difference in service after the creation of a single force.

Jim Scott, 47, was appointed as area manager for all three Ayrshire counties - building on 24 years of service in Fire and Rescue in the west of Scotland.

Based at Ardrossan, he had also served a stint at Cumnock Community Fire Station as deputy commander for Strathclyde and also was the first station manager at Kilmarnock Fire Station.

He now had responsibility for the Scottish Fire and Rescue service across Ayrshire after the new single force came into being on April 1, 2013 but the new area manager believes that this should not affect their level of service.

He said: “There shouldn’t be any noticeable difference to the public. The aspiration of the chief officer is to maintain business as usual and I think we can proudly say that is the case in Ayrshire. “If somebody needs our services, whether in an emergency or not, there will be the same level of service as it was when we were eight fire and rescue divisions so you still pick up the phone and dial 999 and you will get the same response.”

Meanwhile, 4,000 jobs would be created in North Ayrshire, thanks to £5million of Government funding, it was claimed.

More than 150 members of the public and business people turned out for the Irvine Bay Regeneration Company’s Annual Public Meeting in the Gailes Hotel in Irvine to hear about how they aim to transform Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Irvine and Kilwinning by attracting new business and improving the appearance of the towns.

Projects included improvements to the Ardrossan quayside and work starting on the town’s new medical centre, plus a £25million transformation of Irvine town centre.

Work on the i3 (Irvine, Innovation and Industry) campus was also underway.
