A MAN has died after he was recued from the River Irvine last night.

Police Scotland confirmed that a 49-year-old male died in hospital following a multi-agency rescue from the river shortly after 8.40pm on Wednesday, June 14.

Officers say that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Police attended alongside coastguard rescue teams, the RNLI and the Scottish Ambulance Service after the alarm was raised following an incident by the A737 road bridge.

A Coastguard spokesperson said: "Coastguard rescue teams from Ardrossan and Ayr responded to reports of a man in the River Irvine in Irvine yesterday (Wednesday June 14).

"The alarm was raised at about 8.30pm after an incident by the A737 road bridge.

"The coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick responded along with the RNLI's inshore lifeboat from Troon, Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

"The person was taken to hospital in a land ambulance."

Police confirmed that the man was later pronounced dead in hospital.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of concern for a man in the River Irvine near to Marress Road in Irvine shortly after 8.40pm on Wednesday, 14 June.

“The 49-year-old was rescued from the water and taken to Crosshouse Hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has also been approached for comment.
