Here’s a blast from the past: a selection of photos from the Irvine Times 25 years ago – all in glorious black and white.

Back in 1998, the Times still hadn’t brought in full colour photos. That would follow within a year or two.

Irvine Times: Times reporter Kenny meets Billie Piper

Thousands of partygoers prevented the Radio One Roadshow event in Irvine being a complete washout.

Almost 3,000 people danced in torrential rain as acts such as Billie Piper, Del Amitri, boy band Ultra Nate and Tin Tin Out played at the Beach Park.

Lucky Irvine Times reporter Kenny McAlpine managed to get an interview with Billie Piper, above.

Irvine Times: Emma Jane Robertson presents a bouquet to Princess Anna

The Princess Royal was welcomed to Irvine for the opening of a new £33million plant at Smithkline Beecham. Dreghorn youngster Emma Jane Robertson, nine, got to present Princess Anne with a bouquet.

Irvine Times: Hunter from Gladiators at Eglinton Park

Hunter from TV’s Gladiators dropped into Kilwinning’s Eglinton Park to promote the ME Foundation. He spent three hours signing autographs for youngsters and even got the chance to shake hands – well, gauntlet – with on of Eglinton’s own Knights in Armour.

Irvine Times: John Miller and his version of Thomas the Tank Engine

An English company ruined Marymass for Irvine kids by derailing a visit from Thomas the Tank Engine.

The talking train, built by John Miller, had been a feature at the festival for years.

But John, who used his own version of Thomas to raise cash for charity, had received a legal warning from copyright holders Britt Miller.

John said: “The weans love it. I think they’re right out of order.”
