Detectives are appealing for witnesses following an assault on board the 11.15pm ScotRail service from Glasgow Central to Largs.

The incident happened on Saturday, August 12 between 11.29pm and 11.55pm.

Three men assaulted another man and then left the train at Kilwinning station.

The victim suffered lacerations to his face and an injury to his ankle that will require surgery.

The British Transport Police said several people were sitting nearby and may have witnessed the assault.

The three suspects are described as:

  • A white man, believed to be in his late twenties, around six-foot tall. He was of medium build, with ginger hair and beard, and wearing a dark t-shirt.
  • A white man, believed to be in his late twenties, and around six-foot tall. He was of medium build, with ginger hair and beard, and wearing a dark t-shirt.
  • A white man, five feet ten inches. He was of medium build, with short dark hair, and wearing a red t-shirt or polo.

One passenger on the train revealed: "I was on another carriage and didn't witness the assault but the train stopped in Kilwinning for around half an hour.

"A ScotRail worker told us the victim had received a serious facial injury and they were waiting on an ambulance.

"Around 15 minutes later, just before 12.30am, one of the guards said they had been told there would be a long wait for an ambulance.

"A lot of people were quite concerned, obviously about the injured man but also about how long they would be stuck in Kilwinning. There were no taxis available at the time.

"As the victim was travelling to Largs, the rail crew decided to continue on the journey there, where he could receive treatment for his injuries."
