THE local police force and trading standards officers have issued a warning to the people of Irvine about alleged "doorstep criminals".

It comes after reports had been received about two males who were reportedly from a gas company going around homes in the Broomlands area.

Police say that the two men, who were said to be aged between 18 and 22, were seen in the area around 6.30pm on Monday, October 9.

They added that they "appeared to be selective on the homes they were doorstep calling" and had been requesting bank details from the people that they spoke to.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Doorstep criminals can be cunning and convincing.

"They will target anyone - but often select the most vulnerable in our society - fabricating a story or excuse to enter a property or gain the personal details of their victims.

"We do not recommend dealing with cold callers. If you are not sure, don't answer your door."
