A prestigious national prize was presented to local golfers at Irvine Bogside in October 2008.

The club captain and members of St Mungo Golf Club were presented with the National Guardian Trophy at Bogside after defeating opposition from across Scotland.

North Ayrshire Council workers were preparing for a third strike over pay in 2008. The Unison and GMB members had already picketed the council’s Irvine HQ.

Finally, North Ayrshire Council leader David O’Neill claimed the loss of £15 million from the £400 million council budget wasn’t the end of the world.

North Ayrshire Council were one of the worst-hit local authorities in October 2008 after the Icelandic banks crisis.

However, Cllr O’Neill urged people not to panic amid rumours in the national press of council tax increases and staff cuts.

He said: “It would be wrong to say that there will be no impact. However, we have got to keep it in perspective.”
