PEOPLE in Irvine are being urged to have their say North Ayrshire Council's latest housing development proposals for the town.

A total of 31 units, comprising 29 new homes, are planned at the former Stanecastle School site on Burns Crescent.

The £8 million project, which received significant funding from a £3m Scottish Government Grant, includes a variety of general needs houses, amenity bungalows and homes suitable for wheelchair users.

The school closed in 2021, when North Ayrshire Council (NAC) centralised provision for young people in the area with additional support needs at the new Lockhart Campus in Stevenston.

Plans to build new homes on the site were first revealed in February 2023.

Councillor Tony Gurney, NAC's cabinet member for green environment and economy, said the council are "more than halfway" towards building their target of 1,600 new homes across North Ayrshire.

He said: “These new modern, energy-efficient homes in Irvine will help push us further towards achieving our ambitions.

“The new affordable homes champion the strategic priorities set out within the Council Plan by improving wellbeing and addressing climate change through the delivery of energy efficient homes which are accessible and have been designed to easily adapt to tenants’ changing needs.

“Consultation with local residents and housing applicants ensures that our new homes contribute to community cohesion and our contractors’ participation in the Council’s Community Benefits Scheme means that training and employment opportunities will also be available for North Ayrshire residents.”

A public consultation event has been scheduled on January 18 allowing residents to gather more information about the project, view final site plans and house designs, and discuss with the contractor, Ashleigh (Scotland) Limited.

It will be held at the Lanfine Community Centre, Girdle Toll, on Thursday, January 18 from 4pm to 6pm.

Work is expected to start early next year with an anticipated completion date of autumn 2025.

To secure attendance at the consultation event, interested parties can contact the council via email at developmentandstrategy@north-ayrshire.gov.uk or telephone at 01294 324031.
