Disabled people in an Irvine street who are unable to park outside their houses have called for action to solve the problem.

Some residents of Vennel Gardens have to walk 60 yards from their homes to access their vehicles.

David Phillips from Irvine Community Council raised the issue at a meeting of the group last Wednesday, on behalf of Irvine Seniors Forum.

He said: “There is a problem with parking at Vennel Gardens. Residents would like to put disabled bays as they are not able to park in front of their houses and they have limited mobility.

“People are having to walk and have limited mobility. There are 16 residents in the street and eight or nine have blue badges.

“One guy has to walk 60 yards to get to his house. We just want people to have as much ease in the last part of life as they have had in the first. That is all we are looking for.”

North Ayrshire councillor Christina Larsen (SNP, Irvine South), attending the meeting, said she expected there would have to be a consultation with neighbours around disabled bays.

She said:  “Each individual household may have to specifically ask about a disabled bay and there would be a consultation with neighbours.”

Councillor Chloe Robertson (SNP, Irvine West) said: “Vennel Gardens is in my ward and I will contact Susan McFadean from the Roads Department to discuss this issue.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said:  “In recognition of the town centre location, when Vennel Gardens was constructed, the council installed resident-only signage at the parking spaces.

“Notwithstanding this, the council will discuss residents’ requirements for accessible parking provision at the next residents’ meeting.”
