Ayrshire is well known for its hundreds of pubs and bars, from Largs in the north all the way to Girvan in the south.

But just what are the top-rated watering holes in the region?

We looked at review site TripAdvisor to find out what customers have been saying about their favourites.

1. DROUTHY NEEBORS, LARGS

A popular spot in the seaside town, the Drouthy Neebors in Largs is rated as the best watering hole in Ayrshire. 

It has been handed 139 'excellent' reviews on the ratings platform, and gets 4.5 stars out of 5. 

The Greene King venue has been praised for its friendly hospitality, great food and top choice of drinks.

2. HARBOUR LIGHTS, IRVINE

Based on Harbour Street in Irvine, this watering hole is the second choice for patrons when drinking in Ayrshire.

It has been handed 137 'excellent' reviews on TripAdvisor, with plenty more rating the venue as 'very good'. 

One reviewer said the pub was "worth a visit", with the food being described as "first class".

3. THE NEWTON BAR, MILLPORT

The top rated pub in Cumbrae's only town, The Newton Bar is a popular watering hole on the island. 

Serving a good variety of food and drink, it also hosts regular events to attract locals and visitors. 

It specialises in Scottish and British cuisine, and also provides vegetarian and vegan options too.

4. THE VAULTS, GIRVAN

The first South Ayrshire offering on this list, The Vaults regularly brings visitors to Girvan for its good food and drink.

It has earned more than 100 'excellent' and 'very good' reviews on the ratings site, making it number four on the list of best pubs in Ayrshire.

Reviewers have singled out the venue's Sunday roast dinner as a highlight of its food offering.

5. THE PRESTWICK PIONEER, PRESTWICK

The final entry on the top five list, this Wetherspoon pub is labelled as the best of its chain in Ayrshire. 

It offers the regular Wetherspoon food and drink, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. 

It has 170 'excellent' ratings and 193 'very good' ratings on TripAdvisor.
