POLICE say their enquiries are "ongoing" following an incident in which a dog attacked another dog in the centre of Irvine.

Footage emerged online showing what appeared to be a disturbance and a dog-on-dog attack on High Street.

Video images shared online have shown what is said to be an XL Bully-type dog attacking another dog.

The footage, which has been seen by the Times but is too distressing to share, the animal appears to bite the neck of another dog with light fur.

A struggle takes place for more 30 seconds where the dog which appeared to be attacked can be heard yelping loudly.

A number of people nearby are understood to have tried to intervene by pulling the 'Bully-type' dog away.

Eyewitnesses who were around the scene - said to have taken place in High Street on Wednesday, April 3 - were left shocked by what they had seen.

One said: "It was very upsetting. The XL bully didn't seem to have the muzzle on properly and took about five people to restrain it."

Another commented: "I  feel so sorry for the poor dog that got attacked.

"It’s a wee shame for the other dog who didn’t do anything and that other one wouldn’t let go.

"The good news is the dog didn’t look too distressed after being let go."

Police Scotland have confirmed they were called to the incident, as well as a disturbance in the area, and that one dog required treatment but has no lasting injuries.

A force spokesperson said: “Around 4.50pm on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, officers received a report of a disturbance and dog-on-dog attack on High Street, Irvine.

“One of the dogs was seen by the vet but has no lasting injuries.  No-one was injured.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
