Kilmarnock would meet the challenge of Europe "head on" if they secure their place in one of the continent's elite competitions, according to assistant manager Paul Sheerin.

The Rugby Park side are eight points clear of St Mirren in fourth place, and could clinch the position if results go their way this weekend.

Sheerin admits Europe wasn't spoken about at the start of the season, but a berth in the top six was one of the goals ahead of a successful campaign so far.

He said: "If you get around the top six, then you are going to be close. Normally sixth place would have a wee opportunity.

"We knew if we could be around the top six, we would have the opportunity of getting to Europe.

"To be eight points clear at this stage is a different scenario, the fact we are so clear at this moment is more of a surprise for us."

The assistant manager believes Killie's progress on a potential European adventure would be influenced by the draw, but says the club are looking forward to any tie they get.

He added: "The draw dictates a lot, there are some massive teams in it and if you get through the first few rounds, then Champions League teams drop down too.

"I know it's probably too early to say and it will be difficult for a club of our stature, but it's a challenge we'll meet head on and thoroughly look forward to."
