A BUSY section of the A78 commuter road is to close later this month.

The route which connects North and South Ayrshire is to be closed northbound between Auchengate and the Meadowhead Roundabout from Monday, May 13 until Friday, May 17.

This section will be closed between 8pm and 6am each day to allow resurfacing work to be carried out.

Amey, who are completing the work on behalf of Transport Scotland, say a signed diversion will be in operation throughout the duration of the work.

During this time, northbound traffic travelling on the A78 will leave at the Auchengate exit and follow the A759 to re-join the A78 at the Meadowhead Roundabout.

While traffic heading to the B746 towards Troon will be directed southbound along the A78 where commuters will be asked to exit via the B746 off-slip at Loans.

From here, they will be directed to re-join the northbound A78 before exiting at Auchengate however local traffic may also continue through Loans.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout the works duration.

Amey say the road improvement scheme will  benefit around 7,700 vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.

A spokesperson said: "We thank road users for their patience and co-operation while this essential work takes place.

"Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable."
