Irvine mum says Woodland Primary School are bullying her son

Hayley McMillan claims her son is being "bullied" by staff at Woodland Primary and is now hoping to take the matter further.

Her son Mitchell is currently a primary four pupil at the school. The youngster has been diagnosed with ADHD and ASN and is currently awaiting a diagnosis for Autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

In spite of this, Mitchell has been attending school almost every day without fail - and has never received advice stating that he should be placed on a reduced timetable.

However, she says the school have ignored this and have since opted to cut his classroom time.

"The school are well aware of this," Hayley commented, "but they are now bullying my son."

The heartbroken mother has recalled a number of alleged incidents which have taken place while her son attends at Woodlands.

Most specifically, she said that he was removed from lessons one day - and was placed in a locked classroom by himself.

Hayley says Mitchell then escaped from this room, via a window. Staff were completely unaware of this until 45 minutes later - when she bumped into her own son at a shop and informed the school.

She also recalled one day where he son was referred to as an "idiot" by a teacher - who initially denied the claims though later admitted to the fact.

Hayley says the problems are causing issues in her personal life - with Mitchell frequently sent home from school and described as "a danger to himself".

This has led to what is documented as a lack of attendance for Mitchell as, despite his appearance each day, once he is sent home, this is marked as "unauthorized absence" or "truancy" instead of as being on an adapted timetable.

Hayley has had to leave work on several occasions, and constantly fears Woodlands will simply send her son him at any opportunity.

She commented: "They are looking for any excuse to get my kid out of that school. They are taking away his right to an education.

“I need to be here every minute in case that phone goes. It is terrible the way they treat him. They treat him like a bit of s*** on their shoe."

Now, Hayley has raised the matter with the education board, and has held a number of meetings with the school - something she had to fight for off her own back.

She is now considering removing her two children from the school and says the issues "need investigated".

Responding the concerns, North Ayrshire Council say they will look to work through these issues to find a resolution.

A spokesperson commented: “It would be inappropriate for us to go into detail on individual pupils but we always strive to give the best support available to all our pupils.

"If any pupil is unhappy and a family feels they are not receiving the appropriate support we will always try and work with them to find solutions to ensure their experience at school is the best it can be.

“We have held positive discussions with the McMillan family and will continue to work closely with them to ensure a resolution is found.”
