Gulab named Curry Restaurant of the Year in south west

The Gulab Tandoori won its first honours at the Scottish Curry Awards back in 2015.

At that time, Danny and Ronnie Summel saw their venue crowned as the best restaurant in the country.

Since then, the venue has also taken further acclaim with a Team of the Year title won at a later event.

And a decade after their first win, the Gulab is still as highly respected for delivering some of the best food Scotland has to offer.

On Monday, April 14, the Summel brothers again tasted success as the Irvine venue was crowned Curry Restaurant of the Year for south west Scotland.

The only Ayrshire nominee in the category took home the top prize at a glitzy ceremony in the Doubletree Hilton in Glasgow.

Despite their previous success, it was not a prize which Danny saw coming prior to being invited up onto the stage.

He said: “It was amazing, we didn’t actually know we were in the awards. Me and my friends went and it was the last award of the night.

“We got an email months ago but I just thought it was a generic one – I didn’t realise we were in it.”

Though it may come as no surprise to customers of the Gulab - many of which travel from far and wide to sample their Indian cuisine.

Danny added: “It’s been busy lately, on social media as well – we are getting millions of views every week from just normal posts.

“People are coming from everywhere to visit, it’s been really good.

“I’d just like to thank all our customers, staff and family for their support and making this possible.”

The Gulab were one of three North Ayrshire award winners on the night with the Mortherland Spice in Saltcoats and Zain's in Dalry also taking home prizes.

Madras Curry House in Stevenston, Lawthorn Farm Pub and Indian Restaurant in Irvine and Anaya's in Kilbirnie also earned recognition for their efforts.
