BUGLER Christy Kerr helped pay tribute to her great-grandfather and other Second World War dead on the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Christy, a member of the United Church of Irvine, was enlisted by the Royal British Legion to play the Last Post at the VE Day anniversary service as we remembered victory on the European front.
She said: “I have played the Last Post for the Legion in Irvine and for the Legion in Kilwinning at their Remembrance Service for the last 10 years.
"Last year I played at the Memorial Garden in Irvine on Armistice Day.”
Her wartime connections go back a few generations.
She said: “I always grew up with stories of my grandad’s dad, Robert Dickie, who was in the RAF during World War Two in 1944 or 1945.
"There was a crash and sadly he died. He went in to get people out and was injured.
“My granddad (also Robert Dickie) is still alive but he told us stories about his dad and he was really proud of his him, although never got to meet him.
"The people who fought in the war were so brave. I am a teacher at Mayfield Primary School and being involved in things like this helps educate people about the war.
“We must remember about what has been done and that it’s not a story- it was real. Doing things like this brings the reality back.”
