AN Irvine granddad who brought people together during the covid-19 lockdown with a series of virtual discos has organised a special music night later this month.
Elvis aficionado and DJ Paul Downie is hosting a rock ‘n’ roll night in the Crown Inn in Dreghorn on Saturday, October 18, from 7.30pm.
Scottish rock ‘n’ roll band Plymouth 57s will play live songs from the likes of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Wanda Jackson and Connie Francis - and Paul will also spin some rock ‘n’ roll discs.
He said: “My sister-in-law’s partner is involved in the pub and he approached me a few months ago to hold a similar event with a band, and it was really well attended. The manager has now asked me to do another one and I was delighted to do that.
“About 50 to 60 attended and the manager said it was one of the busiest nights in years so hopefully this will go well."
Paul added: “It’s great to support local establishments and people will also enjoy some great live and recorded rock ‘n’ roll music.
“I did more than 150 lockdown discos from home and I enjoyed bringing people together, I gave up my time for nothing for it and it also kept me sane – I was furloughed at the time.”
Paul has been press officer with the Elvis Touch Fan Club for more than three decades and organises the annual bash to mark the legendary late singer’s birthday and to celebrate him landing at Prestwick Airport – the only time he set foot on UK Soil.
It has been held for the past few years at the Adamton Country House Hotel.
Tickets for the rock ‘n roll event are available from the Crown Inn or at the door on the night, priced £8.
