A DOG owner who put his pet "on the backburner" has admitted causing the animal unnecessary suffering.
Lewis Wilson, 26, appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court after previously pleading guilty at trial to one charge in relation to his dog, Tye, who had to be euthanised.
Wilson admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the 12-year-old dog between September 29, 2024 and January 29, 2025.
He did this by failing to provide the dog with adequate nutrition, resulting in his emaciated bodily condition.
He then failed to seek appropriate veterinary assessment and treatment for the condition as well as severe bilateral ear infections, a bacterial infection of his digestive tract, a severe flea infestation, chronic inflammation of his skin and a significant hair loss.
The conditions caused Tye to be euthanised on welfare grounds.
Defending, solicitor Kevin Corr told the court that Wilson accepted the dog had been "put on the backburner", but he had "demonstrated an appropriate level of remorse and regret".
Mr Corr added: "He was devastated when he learned that the dog had been euthanised; he thought it could have been rehomed.
"He is willing to accept the punishment coming his way. He is suitable for unpaid work.
"He has another dog that's well looked after, and he says this was a one-off period in time for someone who has been a responsible dog owner for years."
Sheriff Morag Fraser deferred sentencing for a vet assessment to be prepared, outlining whether Wilson's current dog was being looked after. His bail was continued in the meantime.
