AN IRVINE-BORN singer has won a top spot in a prestigious songwriting competition.
William Hitchell, who performs with his band under the name The Vintage Explosion, won second place in the Christian category of the International Songwriting Competition.
He specialises in 50s and 60s style rock and soul, from covers to original tracks.
William burst into the limelight in 2022 when his cover of Sam Cooke classic A Change is Gonna Come went viral, racking up over a billion views worldwide.
Now living in Helensburgh, he started performing just before Covid “just as a jolly”, due to his love for 50s and 60s music.
He has since received plaudits for his voice from music legend Rod Stewart, amongst others.
Sir Rod said that Will was the "best white soul singer I have ever heard", while Paul Stanley said the frontman is "up there with the greats".
But now, William's song titled Lay In Your Arms made it through to the top out of approximately 13,000 entries from more than 120 countries, highlighting both emerging and established talent.
The Vintage Explosion's new album ‘Life and Soul’ will be released on July 31.
The competition provides both aspiring and established artists with the opportunity to have their music heard by an elite group of Grammy Award winners, iconic artists, and influential music industry leaders.
"Every year, ISC reveals an inspiring new wave of songwriters whose music moves us, challenges us, and connects us,” said Candace Avery, founder and director.
She added: “The 2025 winners have raised the bar yet again. We are honoured to champion their work and excited to see where their music takes them next."
The Vintage Explosion's next gigs are lined up for Glasgow in October and Ayr in November.
