Irvine man who starved pet dog banned from owning animals

Steven Gardiner pleaded guilty to causing his Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Anthena, unnecessary suffering during a hearing at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

He admitted failing to provide his pet with an adequate diet, causing her to starve. Gardiner also failed to seek veterinary attention for her emaciated body condition.

He was handed a five-year ban on owning and keeping any animal as a result of his conviction.

He faced no further punishment and was thereafter admonished, essentially given a verbal warning, for the offence.

Gardiner's mistreatment of Anthena was uncovered in February last year after a call was made to the Scottish SPCA's animal helpline, raising concerns about a dog.

An inspector visited his home and checked on his pet upon arrival. She was found to be extremely emaciated and her coat was in poor condition.

Anthena's rib and hip bones were prominent and she had some balding and red patches of skin which were visible against her white fur.

Gardiner confirmed that Athena was not receiving any veterinary care. She was removed from the property and taken to a local practice to be looked at.

Upon examination, the vet noted that Athena was very thin and they concluded that she was this way as she had not been fed enough over a period of weeks and, as a result, had been suffering.

Athena was taken to the Scottish SPCA’s Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre for further care and treatment.

She recovered well and was successfully rehomed one month later.

Following the conclusion of proceedings in court, the Scottish SPCA has welcomed the conviction of Gardiner.

An inspector said: “The accused failed to meet the nutritional needs of his dog and as a result, caused her unnecessary suffering.

"Athena was so thin when we got there but we are so glad that she has since been rehomed and has been given a second chance at happiness.

“We are happy that the accused has been handed a five-year ban on owning and keeping any animal.”
