SIXTEEN new Blue Plaques honouring the founders and notable contributors to Irvine Burns Club’s 200 year history have been unveiled at a ceremony at Irvine Old Parish Graveyard.
Deputy Provost John Sweeney and councillor Nairn Angus McDonald joined members of the club and invited guests to mark the milestone occasion on Tuesday, June 2.
Club president Peter Latham opened the event with a welcome, before club director Father Willie Boyd offered a dedication for the newly installed plaques.
Honorary president Bill Cowan then unveiled the plaque commemorating David Sillar, the club’s first vice-president.
He was joined by directors Archie Chalmers, Iain McPhail and Donald Wilson, who oversaw the creation and installation of the plaques.
Later in the day, celebrations continued at the Wellwood Burns Centre and Museum, where president Latham delivered the traditional Founders’ Day Toast.
Councillor McDonald presented the club with a framed copy of his North Ayrshire Council Congratulatory Motion, formally acknowledging the organisation’s bicentenary and its contribution to the region’s heritage.
The Deputy Provost concluded the proceedings by proposing a toast to Irvine Burns Club, recognising its enduring cultural significance.
Irvine Burns Club has produced a free graveyard tour information leaflet and the QR code on each Blue Plaque also provides information.
