TWO public events are set to take place in Irvine next week – one highlighting the fight against racism and the other documenting an historic event involving the unions 100 years ago.

Ayrshire Global Justice Now is organising a public meeting on Opposing Racism at a National and Local Level on Tuesday, June 16, at 7.30pm in the town's Volunteer Rooms.

Speakers are Billy Singh from Show Racism The Red Card Scotland and Pauline Donnelly from Stand Up To Ayrshire. People can come to the meeting in the hall or attend via zoom.

Meanwhile, Ayrshire Morning Star Newspaper Readers and Supporters Group have organised a free screening of a film called The General Strike A Revolution Betrayed.

The screening takes place on Thursday June 18, at 7.30pm in Fullarton Connexions in Church Street.

This remarkable film was unearthed in the archive of radical film production company Platform Films. It was made in the 1970s.

The movie features first hand testimonies from miners and trade unionists who were involved in the 1926 strike. This film is quite simply a unique and historic account of this landmark event.

Anyone interested is very welcome to attend.
