IRVINE music legends Trashcan Sinatras returned to their home town last Friday for a secret gig at the Harbour Arts Centre.
The band, who hit the heights in the early 90s with their debut album Cake, even filmed a video for their upcoming single before the invited audience of friends and long-time fans.
Their new song Games For The ZX Spectrum came out last week. It's from their new album, Ever The Optimist, which will be released on Friday, July 31.
Trashcan Sinatras were formed by John Douglas, Francis Reader, Steven Douglas and Paul Livingston in 1986, winning widespread acclaim. In recent years, they've been joined by Davy Hughes as well.
Guitarist John told the Times after the Irvine gig: "It was very emotional. I was stunned by the whole thing - in a good way.
"We saw a lot of faces we hadn't seen in a long time, including some of our first fans from Manchester who came up for the event.
"We wanted to do a performance-based single for our next video, so this was the perfect opportunity.
"The five of us are rarely together, with two of us based in the States, but we managed to get a couple of days of rehearsal.
"It was great to play the Harbour Arts Centre. It's a great wee venue and Freckfest are drawing a lot of bands from around the world to the HAC these days. They've built up a national reputation in recent years."
John is now based in Glasgow with his wife, former Fairground Attraction singer and songwriter Eddi Reader.
The pair regularly visit Irvine, where Jean Reader - the mum of Eddi and Trashcans singer John - still resides.
John said: "We lost my own mum last year, but we are still constant visitors to Irvine. It's a nice place to go, especially when you head down the harbourside or the beach or the moor.
"It's eight or nine years since our last album was recorded. The three of us in Scotland did some recordings and sent them over to the guys in the US, who added their contributions.
"The album features some guest singers too, including Green Gartside from Scritti Politti and Tracy Anne Campbell from Camera Obscura.
"They're not the first guests on one of our albums. We had Carly Simon on a track back in 2010."
Watch out for the new album Ever The Optimist, arriving late next month.
While touring isn't on the schedule just yet, the band will be releasing a series of singles and promotional videos in the months to come.
