World windsurfing champion Andy Brown is determined to attack

The athlete from Glasgow ensured he remains in medal contention at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy after making the gold fleet on the second day of racing, ranked in 22nd after the preliminary series.

Brown was met with a strong 20-knot wind in Portland Harbour and a course race win was the highlight of the Brit’s day with 10th-place, 13th-place and a discarded disqualification the rest of his results on Tuesday.

Brown ends his preliminary series with race wins in each the upwind sprint slalom and course race and three top 10 performances from eight races in Dorset.

He made the top-half cutoff and will race in the elimination series from Wednesday to Friday, in order to decide the top 10 of the gold fleet who will have the right to race for medals.

“First step done,” Brown said, “I haven’t gone into the gold fleet in the best spot, but nor is it the worst spot.

“It’s a spot in which I can more forward quite aggressively. The thing about gold fleet is that a good day means everything, the points shift so much higher and faster in your fleet. I’ll try and work for it every day.

“The competition starts over, that’s the attitude I’m taking into the elimination series. I want to start races smarter and harder and I’ve showed glimmers of good performances in the qualifying series.

"The good guys can get a handle on shifty winds, but it wasn’t too much to complain about today. It’s all about moving on and there’s a lot of racing ahead,” he added.

The British Sailing Team windsurfer will fight to make the finals series at the windsurfing and sailing venue for the London 2012 Olympics.

All the action is building towards the finale on Saturday, with a Fan Zone at Weymouth Pavilion bringing windsurfing to spectators and families by the Jurassic Coast seaside.

The elimination series start on Wednesday 9 September in both men’s and women’s competitions, with 10 British Sailing Team and British Sailing Squad athletes in the running.

Islay Watson is the leading British woman while Duncan Monaghan is the leading British man into Wednesday, with six more British Sailing Team and British Sailing Squad men in the running for the medal finals this weekend.
