PEOPLE are being urged to take a second look at what they put in their bins.

North Ayrshire Council is calling on residents to recycle correctly during Recycle Week 2026, which started on Monday, September 14, to help avoid contamination and ensure recyclable materials are not wasted.

Contamination occurs when non-recyclable items are placed in recycling bins, or when recyclable materials are soiled, making them unsuitable for processing.

The council advises residents to rinse cans, bottles, and food containers to prevent them from affecting other recyclables.

Councillor Eleanor Collier, cabinet member for green environment and economy, said: "We are delighted to support Recycle Week 2026 and to encourage everyone across North Ayrshire to play their part.

"Recycling correctly is one of the simplest actions we can take to reduce waste, protect valuable resources, and help tackle climate change.

"By taking a few extra moments to make sure the right items go into the right bins, residents can make a real difference.

"I would encourage everyone to take a fresh look at what they recycle at home and join us in making this year’s Recycle Week a success."

The council reminds residents that every correctly recycled item helps save energy and keeps materials in circulation, supporting efforts to combat climate change.
