A popular Channel 4 sketch show, described by fans as "one of the best ever made", is set to make a return to TV after 23 years.

Smack the Pony was a sketch show featuring Fiona Allen, Doon Mackichan, and Sally Phillips, which ran on Channel 4 from 1999 to 2003.

It was a hit among viewers, receiving a 7.7-star (out of 10) rating on IMDb from more than 2,500 reviews.

One fan commented: "One of the best sketch shows ever made! Perfect observation of British social chemistry, work and living conditions.

"It's actually disturbingly accurate! I love the dating videos because of how mad they are but also how believable it is! It's not a far cry from a 90s version of Tinder."

Another added: "Smack the Pony" is, without a doubt, one of the best TV shows out there.

"Ever since I came upon it by accident while channel surfing, I have loved it. The show is very unique and very creative.

"If you are a fan of British comedy, or of sketch comedy, or if you just want a good laugh, you will enjoy "Pony"."

Sally Phillips confirms Smack the Pony's return to TV

The trio reunited at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and now, Phillips has confirmed they will be returning to TV.

Speaking on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch Picky Bits podcast, she said: "We've been offered a special. Yeah, we're doing a special.

"We did Edinburgh Festival last year, we did a kind of chat show, and it went well. People came and liked it. It was amazing, actually.

"These sketches that I'd written when I was 27, people know the lines to. It was amazing, really touching."

Smack the Pony reboot initially knocked back

This latest development comes after a Smack the Pony reboot was initially knocked back in 2019.

Mackichan, speaking to The i Paper at the time, said: "It’s just been really difficult. We’ve pitched to a few places and it’s not happening.

"I don’t know whether it’s [because it’s] older women but it’s not happening, which is, to me, astonishing.

“You think, how funny does it have to be?”
