The minister for Catrine and Auchinleck is aiming to complete the River Ayr walk in just one day in order to raise funds for both churches which have have felt the pinch during the pandemic.

Having managed over 200 miles in five weeks for Doddie Weir’s MND charity earlier this year, Steve Clipston got the “mad idea” to take on the full 44-mile walk so that all proceeds can be split between the maintenance and upkeep of both buildings.

He will set off on Monday, June 21 at the eye-watering time of 3am and aims to finish up around 16 hours later, making pit-stops in between and perhaps even being joined by some parishioners along the way.

Steve said: “Contrary to a common perception, we get no funding from the government. Like many businesses, churches have also felt the financial effect of closure while still having to pay the bills.

“We are entirely reliant on donations from congregational members and others who want to support our work and presence in the community as we seek to share God’s love and forgiveness.

“All proceeds will be divided between the two churches and the respective office bearers will discuss how to use them, whether for essential fabric repairs or to help pay the bills.

“I think it will be tough going. If the paths are dry it will be easier but there are a good few steep inclines along the way with steps built for giants. I will need to pace myself.”

He continued: “I have done the whole walk before but in many different stages to familiarise myself with the different sections and hazards.

Irvine Times:

“I have done Glenbuck to Catrine and on a different day, Catrine to Ayr – I just need to do the two halves on one day.

“There will be a few stops along the way, probably Catrine and Annbank at least.

“Some folks might join me on parts of the walk and others might look out for me passing.

“I’ll put updates of progress on my Facebook page but provisionally, I aim to start at Glenbuck at 3am, Sorn for 9am and to be at the halfway point in Catrine by about 10am. Failford about 12.30, Annbank about 3pm, Auchencruive road about 5pm and finally at the wee lighthouse at the end of the pier for 7pm.”
