Hello and welcome to this weeks’ Irvine Beat FM Column. Earlier this week I spoke with one of our lunchtime presenters, Robert Sommerville. Here’s what he had to say.
Q: How and why did you get involved with Irvine Beat FM?
A: I was a lunchtime guest talking about another voluntary role I was involved with and after the interview got talking to Jack Bennie and within a couple of weeks I had my own show - never having done anything like this before.
Q: What can we expect on your Lunchtime shows?
A. Lunchtime is a real mix of music from the 60’s through to new releases. On a Tuesday I discuss healthy eating topics and on a Wednesday I have a regular feature where I phone up my mother for Mother’s Top Tips. My mother has thousands of handy household tips which she shares with our listeners. I don’t always agree with them which produces a bit of good humoured mother and son banter.
Q: What’s the best bit about being part of the Irvine Beat FM team?
A. It is great to be part of a team doing something for a town that I grew up in. I never ever imagined Irvine would have its own radio station let alone me being a presenter.
Q: What’s your favourite type of music?
A. I love Motown, 70’s and 80’s disco plus female singers such as Beverley Knight and Paloma Faith and of course the great new sound of Betsy, the girl from the Welsh valleys who sounds a bit like Cher.
Q: Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know?
A: Guess most people certainly at Irvine Beat FM know about my 30 plus years as an RAF Pilot but I can run faster than an angry 14 foot alligator. Found this out after trying to move it from our football pitch when I was living in South Carolina!
You can hear Robert every Tuesday and Wednesday between 12 and 3pm.
