IRVINE Meadow moved up to fourth place in the West of Scotland Football League on Saturday, thanks to a 2-0 win at home to third placed Pollok.

But manager Kevin Deeney insists he is still keeping tabs on the sides in the relegation zone, rather thank looking up in the league table.

He told the Times how the weekend’s win puts them out of the reach of one of the sides below them – meaning they now only need to ‘tick off’ two more before safety is secured.

He commented: “Petershill have got five games left. If they win their five games they can’t catch us – so we’ve ticked them off.

“We’ve got to tick two more teams off. We’re more looking at the bottom of the league than the top of the league even though we’re sitting fourth.

“I’m not looking forward. I want to finish as high as I can but the aim was not to get relegated. I want to tick teams off first.”

And despite Deeney focussing on avoiding relegation, on Saturday Medda showed they can compete with the league’s so-called “bigger teams”.

They defeated Pollok 2-0 at Meadow Park – the second time they have defeated ‘Lok by this scoreline this season.

They started the match well and took the lead through one of the league’s top scorers, Callum Graham, on 15 minutes.

And 10 minutes later, Ross Urquhart unleashed an unbelievable strike into the top corner to double Medda’s lead.

Waters was in fine form in the Medda goal to keep Pollok at bay, though a controversial red card for the away side’s Stuart McCann around the hour mark made the North Ayrshire side’s task a lot simpler.

And they stuck to the task superbly to cut the gap on third-placed Lok to six points – with Medda having two games in hand on their visitors.

But while Deeney says he knows his side are capable of great results like Saturday’s, his focus remains elsewhere.

“We know we can go beat the teams at the top end of the league,” he added.

“We know we can compete. We’ve got to be professional enough to take care of the teams below us.

“We’ve drawn and lost to Petershill and we’ve lost two games to Kilwinning, dropped three points against Arthurlie - they’re all down there.

“These are huge points to ship.

“We can’t afford that next season, it’s a bit frustrating. We can beat anyone on our day, we just have to have our day more often.”

Medda are back in action on Wednesday, March 22 as they face Auchinleck Talbot at Beechwood Park. Kick off is 7.30pm.
